The art and science of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy

Dates: September 27 – 28 2024, HYBRID format (on site in Barcelona and Online via zoom).

This seminar offers a theoretical introduction to psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy. We will explore the past, present, and future of this psychotherapeutic approach, covering the work done in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, as well as the research conducted since 1999 at institutions like Johns Hopkins University, New York University, Imperial College London, and more. We will also explore ongoing research, focusing on the key therapeutic modalities and tools used in psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy, and discuss the promising future this innovative approach holds.

Instructors

Dr. William Richards. Currently regarded as the most experienced active researcher in the field of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy worldwide, Dr. Richards works as a psychologist at the Center for Psychedelics and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He also serves as a trainer and consultant for several institutions conducting psychedelic therapy research and leads the team of therapists at Sunstone Therapies.

Dr. Richards holds degrees in Philosophy, Theology, History of Religions, and Psychology, having studied under influential figures such as Walter Houston Clark, Abraham Maslow, and Hanscarl Leuner. His work with psychedelics began in Germany in 1963 with Leuner. From 1967 to 1977, he conducted research with LSD, psilocybin, DPT, and MDA at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center in Baltimore, alongside colleagues such as Walter Pahnke, Stan Grof, Sandy Unger, and Richard Yensen. Their studies explored the potential of these substances in treating alcoholism, addiction, severe neuroses, and psychological distress in cancer patients, as well as their educational applications for mental health and religious professionals.

In 1999, after a 22-year hiatus on U.S. psychedelic research, he and Roland Griffiths resumed psilocybin studies at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Richards is the author of numerous articles and the book Sacred Knowledge: Psychedelics and Religious Experience (2016, Columbia University Press).

Brian D. Richards, Psy.D., completed a Master’s degree in Existential-Phenomenological Psychology at Duquesne University, a Psy.D. at the University of Denver, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit (now the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research), where he contributed to some of the original research administering psilocybin with cancer patients and healthy normal adults.

Dr. Richards was formerly a Clinical Director with MedOptions, once the largest behavioral health provider in the United States. He now cares for patients with a cancer diagnosis at Maryland Oncology Hematology, The Aquilino Cancer Center, and with Gladstone Psychiatry and Wellness. Dr. Richards has worked on varied clinical trials with LSD, psilocybin, and MDMA. He also teaches and mentors students at the California Institute for Integral Studies Psychedelic Medicine Certificate Program.

Dr. Richards was a Lead Psychologist on an innovative, simultaneous group administration high-dose psilocybin trial with cancer patients at the Bill Richards Center for Healing in Rockville, Maryland; a cutting-edge, purpose-built psychedelic medicine clinic—located in a busy outpatient oncology center. He now works with Gladstone Psychiatry and Wellness, an innovative, multisite practice delivering KAP covered by insurance.
